Sunrise Coal - Carlisle Mine / Slurry Impoundment Reconstruction

Sunrise Coal Company wanted to modify and reconstruct portions of their coal fine slurry impoundment cell. The project involved lowering the crest height by 10 feet, reducing the top width by 20 feet, and laying the interior slope to 2.7:1 side slope. The material excavated from the existing levee was then utilized to construct an earthen buttress along the tow of the exterior levee slope. Other activities on this project included the installation of a new primary spillway riser pipe, a grouted rip rap stilling basin, underdrains, ditch relocations, and mulched seeding.  

  • Excavated 430,000 CY of compact fill material

  • Installed 28,000 tons of gravel

  • Removed and Replaced 90,000 CY of topsoil

  • Installed 23,000 LF of drainage

  • Permanently mulched 40 acres

  • Installed new 36-inch diameter pond riser

University Parkway / Highway Construction

WB•Koester constructed the 2nd phase of Vanderburgh County’s plan to extend the north/south route from the University of Southern Indiana to link with Interstate 64. A unique part of WB•Koester’s scope was constructing a 12 acre “man made” wetland. This new wetland is to replace the watersheads that would be removed in the path of the new parkway.

  • Moved 311,000 CY of dirt in this scope

  • Placed 25,000 tons of stone

  • Laid over 2,400 feet of storm drainage piping

  • Incorporated 67,000 SY of lime cement

Evansville Regional Airport / Major Runway Reconstruction & Extension

Power producer Electric Energy Inc. constructed a new CCB landfill for scrubber waste in Joppa, IL. WB•Koester began work early May to construct two creek crossings and haul roads to access the soil stockpile.

  • Cut, Stockpiled, & Placed 465,000 CY of soil

  • Placed 72,000 CY of 3 foot clay liner

  • Installed 58,000 SY of 60 mm HDPE liner

  • Placed 37,000 tons of sand drainage layer

  • Installed 29,500 SY of 40 mm HDPE

  • Provided permanent erosion control and seeding for 30 acres lot
